Answer Engine Optimization: How to Get Cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews

Search used to end with a list of blue links. Increasingly, it ends with an answer. When someone asks ChatGPT for “the best roofer near me” or reads Google’s AI Overview instead of scrolling, the winner is the business the AI decides to cite. Getting chosen is a discipline of its own, and it is called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO).

What answer engines actually reward

Traditional ranking factors still matter, but answer engines add their own priorities. They favor content that is clearly structured, factually grounded, and easy to extract a single confident answer from.

In practice, that means:

  • Direct answers up top. Lead with the answer, then explain. Answer engines lift concise, self-contained statements far more readily than buried ones.
  • Clear structure. Descriptive headings, short paragraphs, and lists give a model obvious units of meaning to quote.
  • Verifiable facts. Specific, checkable claims build the trust a model needs before it will repeat them.
  • Entity clarity. The engine has to understand who you are, what you do, and where you operate before it can recommend you.

Structured data does heavy lifting

Schema markup tells search engines and AI systems exactly what your content means, rather than making them guess. A local business should have, at minimum, LocalBusiness (or a more specific type), FAQPage on pages with real questions, and BreadcrumbList for navigation context. This site uses all three.

A practical checklist

  1. For each service, write a page that answers the exact questions a customer asks, in their words.
  2. Put the answer in the first sentence of each section.
  3. Add FAQ sections with genuine questions, and mark them up with FAQPage.
  4. Keep your business name, address, and phone number identical everywhere.
  5. Build topical depth: cover the whole subject, not just one keyword.

AEO is not a replacement for SEO. It is SEO extended to a world where the result page increasingly answers the question itself. Do both, and you show up whether the customer clicks or just asks.
