Local SEO Basics: How to Rank in the Google Map Pack
When someone searches for a service “near me,” Google shows a map and three business listings above the regular results. That block is the Map Pack, and for local businesses it is the most valuable real estate in search. Most clicks and calls go to those three spots.
Ranking there comes down to three things Google weighs: relevance, distance, and prominence.
1. Relevance: match what people search for
Google has to understand that your business does the thing being searched. Your Google Business Profile category, services, and description all feed this, as does the content on your website. Choose the most specific primary category that fits, and fill out every relevant field. Vague or empty profiles rank poorly.
2. Distance: be clear about where you serve
Google measures how close you are to the searcher. You cannot move your business, but you can define your service area accurately and create content that reflects the places you serve. If you cover several towns, give each one genuine attention rather than stuffing a list of city names into a footer.
3. Prominence: earn trust signals
Prominence is Google’s read on how established and trusted you are. The biggest levers:
- Reviews. Volume, recency, and genuine responses all matter. A steady flow of real reviews is one of the strongest local signals there is.
- Citations. Consistent name, address, and phone number across directories. Inconsistency here quietly holds many businesses back.
- Links. Coverage from local news, associations, and relevant sites.
Start with your Google Business Profile
Before anything else, claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile. Add accurate hours, real photos, your services, and a keyword-aware description. Then ask happy customers for reviews, consistently. This alone moves the needle for most local businesses.
